the Trivialization of NASA

We should have seen it coming.

Seemingly unaware that he has an agency dedicated to the monitoring and study of the engines of climate (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency), on January 26, President Obama decided that NASA should turn its gaze inward. According to the Orlando Sentinel: “The White House will direct NASA to concentrate on Earth-science projects – principally, researching and monitoring climate change.” Apparently NOAA will now begin work on a return to the Moon.

Now, it seems, NASA is to attend to the Muslim world’s perceived lack of self esteem. Major General Charles F Bolden Jr [USMC], NASA Administrator, told Al Jezeera that “ … before I became the NASA administrator, [President Obama] charged me with three things. [ H ]e wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering.” Apparently the State Department will now begin work on a Mars mission.

General Bolden also mentioned that “we can’t get beyond LEO (Low Earth Orbit) without the help of others.” Michael Griffen, NASA Administrator under GW Bush, doesn’t agree with either assertion. “NASA ... represents the best of America. Its purpose is not to inspire Muslims or any other cultural entity,” he says, “To the extent that we wish to go to Mars, we can go to Mars.”

This administration just doesn’t understand the instruments of national government. Their worldview is simplistic to the point of being sophomoric. Their sense of cause-and-effect is stripped of all nuance and subtlety – and therefore, any awareness of unintended consequences. We’ve given the keys to the car to an ADD kid on a sugar high, and shouldn’t be surprised that he’s driving through the yard.

Yeah!...And besides being a kid with ADD on a sugar high, this action just goes to prove that he really is a closet Muslim!

And not only that, he's part of the vast "Global Warming Conspiracy" gang who's REAL agenda is to weaken America and take away our global supremacy! LOL.

I meant what I said … he just doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing.

I know you mean what you said. My facetious reply was meant to imply that you and yours are perhaps too focused on looking for proof to back up your claim that he doesn't have a clue as to what he's doing. I understand. Whereas I and mine are really focused on explaining and defending what he does. He is after all "our guy" and has been from the get-go. From the perspective of you and yours [the H.O.C.], he's been "the enemy" from the start. It's your job to point out every mistake he makes and every imperfection he has. I understand that too.

What I'd really like to hear from you is who in your opinion would have done everything "right" and not have made those stupid mistakes in executing the duties of the office of Pres. of the U.S.

But I don't think you will stick your neck out and divulge who you have in mind. At least not yet. Can we expect that information sometime in the future? Perhaps after Jan. 2011 when the candidates begin to announce who they are who is running for the office in 2012? That will be very interesting to me.

I really wanted to use EagleWatch for more international discussions, and no, I don’t hate Barack Obama, only what he is doing to America for tired, discredited ideological reasons.  Every time I think he has run his course and I can move on, he does something like the utter misappropriation of NASA, and I just can’t let it slide.

I don’t see anyone on the national landscape yet who I would enthusiastically support.  They are all political hacks.  Both sides of the aisle.  The best of the lot so far seems to be Mitt Romney – at least he understands business, the success of which is necessary for government to function.  It is, of course, a waste of time to seriously consider anyone who isn’t running, so, yes, I will wait to expound in detail until much closer to the 2012s.

Libby,

It doesn't matter if Obama is a Muslim, Christian, Jew, or worships an unknown set of deities residing in an abandoned car wash on 42nd street. All of that is completely unrelated to the point.

That point is that NASA's mission is to explore space and expand man's presence there. Our President gutted NASA's ability to do that and is now setting NASA on a diplomatic path.

What a freakin' waste.

Thanks TV. Your opinion is highly valued by all of us, you know. I especially enjoy your colorful metaphors.
