Who really decides US elections?

Slidell, LA - It recently came to my attention lots of folks do not understand who decides elections in this country. The key words for the purpose of this post are "who decides."

When a Democrat speaks to an all Democrat crowd that is called preaching to the choir. Unless that Democrat screws up beyond belief, no one in that room is going to vote for the Republican. If that same Democrat speaks before an all Republican crowd, that is called preaching into the wind. None of them are going to vote for that Democrat no matter what is said.

So there are two substantial groups of people out there that are already decided. Many members of both groups are decided even before the candidate is nominated for the race.

The rest of the electorate is made up of the people that will cast the deciding votes in most US elections. These are the undecided independent voters. In most races neither the Democrats nor the Republicans have a numerical majority by themselves. It takes the votes from those people in the middle to push one candidate ahead of another.

This is why most politicians forget their voting records and put on a game face more palatable to the center during election cycles. Of course once they are done with the election, those campaign statements are promptly "refined" to suit their actual mind set.

This post comes from my expressing concerns the Republicans will run Sarah Palin for President in 2012. Many of my conservative friends are appalled at my doubt she is electable.

But there is no escaping the fact Gov. Palin scares the Hell out of a large number of independent voters. Not only that, some of her message doesn't sit all that well with more then a few conservatives.

The 2010 general election promises to send a lot of liberal representatives home. The 2012 presidential election is in the Republican's hands right now. The conservatives quite literally will have to go out of their way to lose it as things stand now. (Based on current approval polls. Looking at the President's programs, projects and ideology, I don't see any change for the better anywhere on the horizon.)

If the conservatives run an extreme candidate like Gov. Palin, there is an excellent chance we will see four more years of Obama's politics. Hopefully conservative voters will see this in the 2012 primaries. What is left of our future is in their hands.

What an interesting blog posting by you, TV! I had no idea that you didn't find Sarah Palin a viable candidate for 2012. It seemed to me that her positions on political issues were pretty in-sync with yours. The only thing that I suspected you might find unpalatable in her stated goals was her "Christian Values-Moral Majority" stance. Which I suspect you find too extreme?

I agree with your basic premise here. Which is surprising since we so rarely agree on anything political. Palin is definitely a lightening rod and a third rail. If she were chosen as the Presidential candidate of the Republican party in 2012, she would definitely drive a wedge between all those "anything- other-than Democrat" voters. She's much too right-wing for even some right-wingers.

However, since I believe that personality, charisma and photo-genic qualities are the deciders in today's elections, I believe she might end up the chosen candidate. And that's just fine with me! GO SARAH! LOL

Interesting point. I agree with you Sarah Palin needs to back off alittle, she is getting to preachy and repeatative. Like President Obama isn't that already. I get tired of being talked to like I am a second grader. President Obama talks down to us in my opinion and Sarah talks to me like a Grandmother "we can do it, you are smart, go get them." It gets old.

I don't need a motivational speach, I need people that can lead, with firm actions and promising solutions.

I personally believe that our government is like a bedroom that needs to be cleaned... To many people in there made the mess and who wants to clean it up? It is hard to figure out where to begin.

I suggest that what people are doing already. Getting their own affairs in order, working with local government and making it strong.

Sometimes to clean up a mess you have to start at the bottom of the file and work your way up.

It will be scary for 2012 - Lets see how November goes.  Thanks for the post.

The uber-Christian holier then thou attitude does in fact grate on me. But her nerve grating on my part is nothing compared to how she affects independents. The combination of the her statements and some really bad press have given the casual observer a fairly negative picture of her.

Since you believe that personality, charisma and photo-genic qualities are the deciders in today's elections you now understand how Obama got elected in the first place.

Yes. I do understand that many people voted for Barack Obama because of those mentioned qualities. Especially those people who are undecided and not committed party idealogues (such as you and me). More and more current elections are being decided on those merits and not the stance on issues by candidates, IMO. It is an unfortunate circumstance, but it is a reflection of today's modern society. Due, I think, to the information overload that people are being subjected to by the mass media. They become overwhelmed and confused with "data" and "facts" and opinions expressed from both / all sides and they get exasperated and shrug and do their duty and vote for the guy / gal who has the most appealing characteristics. In other words, I don't think the general voter- population pays great attention to the party's or the candidate's positions on issues. Some of us do, but a great many voters are ambivalent and sadly, they are the "deciders". My thoughts. But I'm a cynic...

P.S. I'm sure you are aware of the fact that I, personally, did not vote for Barack Obama because of his personality and charismatic charm. Needless to say.

Libby --> I do not doubt that your vote for Obama was not a charisma enhanced moment of weakness. The fact you support the President's goals makes it far worse then a wide eyed kid voting for the pretty one. You are old enough to know better.

DeLeesa --> We agree that the problems extend to the bottom and need to be handled on that level. When my father taught me to fly he told me, "No matter what happens in flight, even if the very seat in which you are seating is on fire, do not forget to fly the airplane." This applies here too. While cleaning up the details on the bottom, we cannot lose sight or control of the big picture up above.
